At Merdon Junior School, we have been on a journey over the past few years to develop our teaching and learning of Maths Mastery. It has been one in which has been a cultural change for everyone at Merdon in terms of Beliefs, Teaching practices, Commitment and Behaviours. Developing a ‘Mastery approach’ and ‘Growth Mindset’ have become the heart of our whole Maths curriculum.

The essential idea behind mastery is that all children need a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning so that future Mathematical learning is built on solid foundations; building success in all children as mathematicians.  If you are taking a look around the school however, it may be useful for you to have a little advance notice of things you will see in lessons – things that may look different to other schools, or the way lessons/books looked a few years ago.
