History
Our Winchester Trip
Today we went to the Winchester City Museum to explore all the Anglo-Saxon exhibits. We dressed up in Anglo-Saxon clothing, we wrote our names in runes, we played an Anglo-Saxon board game and we completed a treasure hunt around the museum.
How might Anglo-Saxons have planned and built their villages?
Today we researched information about Anglo-Saxon villages to inform our own village designs. After watching videos, using books and pictures and making detailed notes, we planned a typical village addressing all the elements Anglo-Saxons needed for their survival and happiness. Finally we built the village using various resources around the classroom!
How might Anglo-Saxons have chosen a site to settle?
Today we were Anglo-Saxon villagers having just arrived in England. We needed to find a place to settle. Where would make a good site? What would we need? In our groups, we listed what we would need for our village to be effective. We compared our lists and discussed the priorities. We then had a map with three possible sites and, as a group, we had ide which was most suitable and WHY!
Mystery Suitcase
The children in Africa went on an Autumn hunt in the copse. While hunting for signs of Autumn, we came across a mysterious suitcase hidden in the foliage. Who could it belong to? By looking at the contents carefully, the children tried to work out the answer to this question.
When did the Anglo- Saxons live?
We were given a selection of pictures of the different history topics we have studied over our time in school. Our task, with the members of our group, was to sequence the pictures in the order they happened in time.
Where and why did the Anglo-Saxons come from?
We explored old maps showing where the Jutes, Angles and Saxons lived before making the journey to Britain. We found out what these countries are called today by looking in atlases. We then examined various clues to discuss and deduce why the Anglo-Saxons left their lands in search of new places.
