School of Sanctuary
Merdon Junior School has been recognised as a School of Sanctuary by the charity - City of Sanctuary. This awarded was given for the work the school has done in raising awareness of the plight of refugees.
We are proud to be acknowledged for this award as it recognises our HEART values and one of our British Values- Mutual Respect and Tolerance.
Each year, we embrace Refugee Week. Year 6 also complete a 6 week unit of work looking in detail at the crisis in Syria, understanding what a refugee is, why they are driven to leaving their countries, what happens to them on their journeys and where they settle eventually.
It is hoped that this knowledge will help our children to be understanding and tolerant towards any refugee they might meet.
RE WEEK
Each year we also hold an RE week in order to develop children’s understanding of other cultures and faiths. Teachers plan a week of cross curricular work in which RE os taught through all subjects in creative ways. Each class visit the place of worship for their faith and learn a dance from the faith or culture.
