PE and Sport
What does Physical Education look like at Merdon?
At Merdon we recognise the importance of daily physical activity. Everyday the
children have the opportunity to undertake a range of active games whether it
be games during our OPAL break times, our active and inclusion PE lessons that offer a wide and varied curriculum, or our fun inter-house competitions.
Within the classroom, teachers use a range of programmes to ensure children
have the opportunity to re-energise or promote calm and mindfulness throughout the school day.
Each child has the opportunity to participate in 2 hours of PE
lessons each week, which compromise 1 hour of outside games focus and 1
hour inside with a focus on gymnastics or dance. We also provide a range of
extra-curricular sporting clubs both before and after schools where we
encourage all children to join.
School Games Mark Award
We are delighted to announce that we, Merdon Junior School, have achieved the School Games 'Silver' Mark Award for the 2023/24 academic year.
The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in
2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school's engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark, and to celebrate keeping young people active.
We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We are committed to using the School Games to try and engage those young people who haven't previously been active or represented our school, ensuring all our students have a positive experience and have the confidence to try new activities beyond school. At Merdon, we believe in the power of physical activity and school sport and we strive to give opportunities to those young people that need it most either as a participant, leader, official or volunteer.
As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas linked to the five School Games outcomes and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
A special thanks to everyone who has contributed to this: children, parents, staff.
House Captains
At Merdon, we have an enthusiastic group of House Captains from Year 6 who are keen to improve P.E, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) across the school. House Captains apply at the start of each academic year and are responsible for demonstrating the school HEART and IGNITE values to all children across the school.
House Captains help to organise and lead events such as Sports Day, Inter-house Sports competitions, year group sporting festivals and external sporting events for local KS1 schools. House Captains also give opinions on what they would like our PE and sport provision at Merdon to offer in the future.
In addition, our House Captains lead games, PE warm ups/cool downs and also look after the P.E equipment. This role develops important values such as friendship, respect and kindness, as well as building their confidence and communication skills throughout the year.
The children play an invaluable role in promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst their peers and are keen to support their peers in getting enough physical activity.
Our House Captains are:
- Passionate
- Considerate
- Kind
- Respectful
