Tuesday 8th March, County Cross Country Championships
Following the district cross country event in December two of our year 6 children qualified for the County event which was held at Down Grange in Basingstoke. Both runners joined other children from across the Winchester and Eastleigh District where they ran as a team against other districts. The attendance was huge and the standard was high. The race was 1800m over a range of terrains and the pace was fast. Both runners finished high up the field but we are yet to hear how we did as a district over all. What a fantastic achievement - well done to both!
UPDATE!
The results are in...
Our girls came 5th and our boys came 3rd out of 14 districts! Amazing!
Thursday 10th March, Tag Rugby Festival
On Thursday we took a team to Winchester Rugby Club to take part in a tag rugby tournament hosted by Sparsholt College. The theme for the festival was the Commonwealth Games and Merdon were asked to represent South Africa. The team sang and waved their flag all day which won them the awards of most colourful team and best flag! Although the festival was non-competitive I am pleased to say that many tries were scored and we came away with 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw. Well done all, you have done Merdon proud!
Tuesday 15th March, Netball match at Hiltingbury School
On Tuesday we took two teams to Hiltingbury School to take part in a netball friendly. Both teams have been working really hard together at netball club so it was fantastic to give them the opportunity to put their skills to the test in a match environment. One of our teams narrowly lost their match by 1 goal but it was a brilliantly contested game and Opposition's Player was awarded to Madi and Ava S. The other team won their match by 7 goals and Opposition's Player went to Lexi and Ava B. Next week we are welcoming Hiltingbury to Merdon to play our other two netball teams so watch this space...
Tuesday 29th March, Fair Oak invitation relay
On Tuesday we were lucky enough to be able to take 18 runners from years 4, 5 and 6 to a X-Country relay event hosted by Fair Oak Junior School. This is a fabulous team event that is attended by many local schools. Each race is divided into lower and upper school boys and girls and each runner has to run a lap of the huge field before handing over the baton to the next runner. Below are the team results and each race was ranked out of 20 schools! A huge well done to all our runners!
Lower School Girls - 5th place
Lower school Boys - 5th place
Upper school Girls - 7th place
Upper school Boys - 11th place
Tuesday 29th March - Netball Tournament
On Tuesday one of our year 6 netball teams represented Merdon at the level 2 netball tournament hosted by Kings' school. This was a huge tournament with 15 schools taking part. The event was a high 5 rotation which meant that our players had to rotate positions between each match. This gives participants the opportunity to play in positions they don't normally play in.
Our team won their pool comfortably with 5-0, 6-0 and 7-0 wins which took them into the semi-final against Compton School. Sadly we lost 2-5 to Compton, who went onto win the tournament. Having lost in the semi final we faced Hiltingbury School for the 3rd place play off. Our girls won this match 2-0 which put them in 3rd place overall. The girls all played amazing netball and did Merdon proud!
Wednesday 30th March - Gymnastics, Kings' School
On Wednesday we were lucky enough to take a group of budding gymnasts to learn some new skills at Kings' School. The children took part in a circuit of gym activities, each coached by pupils from Kings'. They tried out new partner balances, beam skills and even vault. It was a great event and all the children had lots of fun! Well done all.
