Stem sentences
The use of language in Maths is fully encouraged, including children speaking in full sentences, as it provides a powerful way for children to explore and reason about their mathematical ideas. Stem sentences, which support children in their explanations, are created by Teachers and used across all topics in Maths. Through the use of exploration mathematical concepts are also defined throughout the learning journey. Please look at our Maths Progression document for specific vocabulary we promote as well.
Here are some examples of stem sentences used to support children in explaining their ideas:
- The denominator is _3_ because the shape is split into __3__ equal parts.
- The three represents three whole kilograms and the five represents five tenths of a kilogram.
- There are ____5___groups of ____3__stars. There are ____15___ stars altogether.
